Myths about counselling

There is a myth that attending counselling is a sign of weakness, or that you are 'crazy' or 'mentally unwell.'

Not everyone who comes to counselling has mental health difficulties. Whilst many are in emotional distress, there are many others who simply feel they need to talk to someone and need a safe place to explore thier feelings.

Asking for help, and exploring your feelings and emotions with a view to leading a more positive life is sign of courage, not weakness.

Psychodynamic Counselling

There are all sorts of different counselling styles. Green Room Counselling offers a type of therapy called ‘psychodynamic counselling.’ This type of counselling is founded on the belief that a person’s past experiences have an effect on the way they live now. It is drawn from the insights of psychoanalysis as a way of understanding what makes people tick. During counselling, we look at the unconscious mind, as well as what is acted out more consciously. We might look at dreams, defence mechanisms, and the way we interact with one another. We try and understand the meaning of past events and how they might play out in the ‘here and now.’ Ultimately, it is hoped that the opportunity to explore your thoughts and your feelings in a supported environment can be rewarding and potentially life-changing.

I just want to talk to somebody!                  How long will it take?

It is expected that counselling may be a strange, new and, for some, even scary proposition. I work at your pace. Counselling is not something that is ‘done to you’ but is a collaboration with the counsellor, working together to make sense of what’s going on for you.

As your counsellor I will offer you acceptance, empathy, and understanding. Above all, this is based on a relationship where trust is fostered. And yes, you do get to talk. I am here to listen.

Many people want to know from the outset how long counselling will take, and how long it will be before they start to feel ‘better.’

Every client is different

During your counselling I will work with you to decide on what is appropriate. I tend to work in an open-ended way. This means that I do not specify an end point at the beginning, because it is not always possible to know how long counselling will take for each client.

I do offer time-limited therapy, where the length of counselling is specified from the start. However, as with any counselling arrangement, your progress, and your thoughts and feelings about the work, can be considered and reviewed at any time.
